The Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, was the continuation of the Roman Empire which began in 330 AD and flourished for 1000 years.

The Roman Emperor, Constantine shifted the center of power from the western half of the Roman Empire to the Eastern half. Constantine wanted to create a “New Rome” and rebuilt the city of Byzantium (Istanbul today) to be the new capital of the empire.
