Mosaic work and frescoes were integrated in churches in the Roman- Byzantium empire , remnants of which can be seen in modern day Turkey . This book captures the art of that era and showcases image of ‘the lamb’
Byzantine mosaics were made of small pieces of glass, stone, ceramic, or other material, which are called tesserae. The Byzantine craftsmen included gold leaf and precious stones, and perfected their construction. As they put mosaics on the walls (instead of floors) they could also use fragile materials: mother of pearl, gold and silver leaf, and glass of different colors. Small glass cubes, were placed at angles to catch and reflect the light, creating a sparkling, otherworldly atmosphere.
